Questions to Ask Before Opening a Checking Account

It’s good to shop around for a checking account that works for you! Free checking accounts are sparse, but they’re out there, and some even come with rewards. It’s easy to get comfortable when it comes to banking, but you could save hundreds each year just by keeping your money somewhere else.

If you’re on the hunt for a better checking account option, here’s what you need to figure out before deciding:

What Services Does it Come With?

At the bare minimum, you should be able to have access to a Bill Pay service and a 24/7 Telephone Banking (call) service. With Bill Pay, you can have all your bills sent to your online banking account and schedule them from there, which is much easier than logging into all the various services you have. Telephone Banking allows you to dial a number and perform basic transactions.

If you want a more robust service, look for options like Popmoney, which will allow you to send money to someone.

Is There a Mobile Banking App?

The mobile app will let you log into your account and perform actions like deposit a check via a picture, transfer money, pay bills and more. It’s a convenience you don’t want to be without.

What’s the ATM Network Like?

If you like to carry cash, you’ll want to figure out how easy it is to get that cash. Many credit unions, Aspire FCU included, are part of a network that provides access to over 70,000 surcharge-free ATMs. You also get access to over 5,000 shared branches.

What Kind of Rewards are Available?

Just because you have a free checking account doesn’t mean it should be without rewards. Look for an account that provides incentives for things you’ll be doing anyway, like using your debit card. The Purchase Rewards service lets you select discounts from retailers and restaurants you like based on your debit card usage.

What’s more, ePower Plus gives you 1 point for every $1 spent, and points are redeemable for cash back.

Whatever checking account you’re looking at, make sure you’re getting as many benefits as possible!
